‘Happy Birthday’ is a slickly packaged vehicle for its two stars, but utterly uninspiring at the very same time.

A zippy, expertly performed romantic comedy with an abundance of style and quality, ‘La Brassiere’ is a pleasant surprise.

‘Let’s Go Slam Dunk’ cannot seem to decide whether it is aiming for heart-felt sentiment or low-brow, ‘Lucky Stars’-style comedy.

With strong performances from its two leads, a cast of solid background characters and a nod to the indomitable spirit of the Hong Kong people, ‘Little Big Master’ is captivating viewing.

With characterisation so strongly emphasised in the film, it’s encouraging to see that both of the pivotal figures are empathetic enough to make Derek Yee’s goal successful.

The concept may take a little getting used to, but ‘Love For All Seasons’ is a superior vehicle for Sammi Cheng and an enjoyable mixture of zany plot twists, comedy and romance.

Lam puts a tried-and-tested couple together on the screen, fills the narrative with sweet and humorous asides and ends on an emotionally stirring reconciliation scene.

If nothing else, this film goes to show how a lack of good material can sometimes be covered over by an excellent cast.

‘New Kung Fu Cult Master’ isn’t a great film, maybe not even a very good one, but there’s enough strengths here to make you eager to watch the second part.

A well-scripted, superbly executed thriller with a formidable triumvirate at the centre, this could well be one of the best genre films to have come from Asia in the past few years.

While ‘Overheard’ was an excellent homage to the great American conspiracy films of the 70s, the in-name-only sequel is a more routine two hours with a far less incisive denouement.

Wordy, but with nothing to say, this is a verbose movie populated by monumentally dull characters and bland ‘twists’ that fail to hold the attention.
