Blu-ray release: ‘High and Low’

BFI are bringing the 1963 Japanese police procedural crime drama ‘High and Low’ (天国と地獄) to UK Blu-ray on January 29, 2025.
Co-written and directed by Akira Kurosawa, the film revolves around an executive at a Yokohama shoe company who becomes a victim of extortion when his chauffeur’s son is kidnapped by mistake and held for ransom. The cast includes Toshiro Mifune, Tatsuya Nakadai, Kyoko Kagawa, Tatsuya Mihashi, and Isao Kimura.
Synopsis: Wealthy industrialist Kingo Gondo (Mifune) faces an agonising choice when a ruthless kidnapper, aiming to snatch his young son, takes the chauffeur’s boy by mistake – but still demands the ransom, leaving Gondo facing ruin if he pays up.
