The Japan Foundation are bringing the 2024 Japanese sci-fi comedy ‘A Samurai in Time’ (侍タイムスリッパー) to select UK cinemas from February 8 to March 31, 2025.
Written and directed by Junichi Yasuda, the film follows a samurai who is struck by lightning and subsequently awakens on a present-day film set, where he begins working as an extra. The cast includes Norimasa Fuke, Yoshiharu Fukuda, Hajime Inoue, Yutaka Izumihara, Ichiko Kurenai, and Rantaro Mine.
Synopsis: During a stormy night at the end of the Edo period in Kyoto, a samurai prepares to fight against a ronin. Suddenly, a flash of lightning hits and he awakens to find that he has travelled through time to the present day. The location where he was about to duel has now been transformed into a film set for jidaigeki TV shows and movies. Still in his samurai clothes, he is mistaken for an extra and immediately thrust into the world of jidaigeki productions. Due to his very ‘authentic’ look and speech, he starts working on many productions and finds himself playing the role of a “kirareyaku”, a swordsman whose job is to die spectacularly on film.
