‘Actresses Don’t Cry’ (女優は泣かない / Joyu wa Nakanai) is a 2023 Japanese drama written and directed by Yoshifumi Udou.
The film revolves around an actress who secretly returns to her hometown to film an intimate documentary but is soon outed and must face the family she ran away from. The cast includes Misako Renbutsu, Marika Ito, Shusaku Kamikawa, Mana Mikura, and Jinto Yoshida.
Synopsis: Actress Sonoda Rie, who has lost her job due to a scandal, returns to her rural hometown for the first time in 10 years to film an intimate documentary. However, the only person who turns up is Seno Saki, an AD in the TV station’s variety squad, and the two begin a difficult shoot. Despite Rie’s desire to film as secretly as possible, rumours spread in the small town and her family hears about her return home without telling anyone about the filming. Rie once ran away from the town after a fight with her father Yasuo, but he is now suffering from terminal cancer. [© Far East Films]
