‘Asakusa Kid’ (浅草キッド) is a 2021 Japanese comedy-drama directed by Hitori Gekidan.
Based on an autobiographical novel by Takeshi Kitano, the film follows a young Kitano during his time spent working as an apprentice to comedian Senzaburo Fukami. The cast includes Yuya Yagira, Yo Oizumi, Mugi Kadowaki, Nobuyuki Tsuchiya, and Honami Suzuki.
Synopsis: The year is 1965 and Takeshi Kitano (Yuya Yagira) decides to drop out of university. He begins working as an elevator operator at the Asakusa France-za strip club, where he meets comedian Senzaburo Fukami (Yo Oizumi). Impressed by his skills, Kitano asks to become his apprentice and Fukami agrees. He does so with one request – Kitano must keep the mindset of an entertainer at all times, not only on stage but also in his daily life. Due to the success of television, people start to attend the club less and less but Kitano continues to learn from Fukami and the other talented apprentices. [© Far East Films]
