Trailer: ‘Great Absence’

‘Great Absence’ (大いなる不在) is a 2024 Japanese drama co-written and directed by Kei Chika-ura.

The film revolves around the reconciliation of a father and son who had been estranged for a long time among lost memories and dispersed pieces of life. The cast includes Mirai Moriyama, Tatsuya Fuji, Yoko Maki, Hideko Hara, and Masaki Miura.

Synopsis: When Takashi (Mirai Moriyama) was little, he and his mother were abandoned by his father Yohji (Tatsuya Fuji). Now, Takashi is all grown up and he is married to Yuki (Yoko Maki). One day, Takashi receives a phone call from a police station in Kyushu that his father Yohji was arrested. Takashi and his wife Yuki travel to Kyushu to see his father. There, Takashi meets his father Yohji for the first time in 20 years. Yohji now has Alzheimer’s disease and he seems like a different person from the past. Yohji’s second wife Naomi (Hideko Hara) is also missing. Takashi begins to look into the past of his father Yohji and his stepmother Naomi.

‘Great Absence’ opens across Japan on July 12, 2024.
