‘Heroes of Dunhuang’ (敦煌英雄) is a 2024 Chinese historical action war drama directed by Cao Dun.

The film tells the legendary story of the heroes who fought bravely to return the city of Dunhuang (historically known as Shazhou) to the Tang Dynasty. The cast includes Zhang Yu, Shawn Dou, Lu Liang, Cai Lu, Zhao Yunzhuo, Gong Lei, Yang Yi, Zhao Wei, Gao Zhiting, Lu Xiaolin, Yu Ailei, and Zhang Yifan.

Synopsis: Dunhuang of the Tang Dynasty was known as Shazhou in ancient times. After the Anshi Rebellion, the Tibetan forces captured Shazhou, and the Tang defenders were all martyred. In the more than 60 years since it broke away from the Tang Dynasty, Shazhou has been devastated, and the ruling forces of Tubo have been ferocious and belligerent, which has added to the people’s grievances.

The military and civilians of Shazhou miss the Tang Dynasty day and night, and under the leadership of Zhang Yichao (Yang Yi), the military and civilians of Shazhou, including his daughter Twelve Niang (Zhang Yifan), are the first to cause trouble. However, there is a huge disparity in strength between the two sides, and Shazhou is in a hurry. The grain thief Wolf Harrier (Zhang Yu) and the deserter Nuo Ci (Cai Lu) accidentally joined the rescue team of Zhang Yichao’s daughter Zhang Yueya (Zhao Yunzhuo) and Cao Guangzong (Dou Xiao), the second lang of the Cao family, and shouldered the last hope of the military and people in Shazhou. During this period, the mysterious Zhang Duwei (Lei Jiayin), the legendary lonely brave standard-bearer (Zhu Yawen), Liao Heiyun (Li Guangjie) who guarded the mural cave and other characters all appeared.
