‘Sunset Sunrise’ (サンセット・サンライズ) is a 2025 Japanese comedy-drama directed by Yoshiyuki Kishi.

Based on the novel of the same name by Nire Shuhei, the film revolves around a Tokyo salaryman who moves to a country town during the pandemic and finds a life he never thought he’d live. The cast includes Masaki Suda, Mao Inoue, Masatoshi Nakamura, Ken Miyake, and Chizuru Ikewaki.

Synopsis: In 2020, the world is forced into lockdown by the COVID pandemic. As remote work is popularized in order to keep the infection rate under control, a young man employed by a company in Tokyo moves to a country town on the Sanriku Coast in Miyagi Prefecture, which sustained severe damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami of 2011. Surrounded by the delicious bounty of the sea and mountains, he spends his days indulging in his favourite hobby, fishing. Through meeting his gutsy landlord, who also happens to be a talented cook, and interacting with the eccentric local residents, the young man discovers what makes him happiest.

‘Sunset Sunrise’ opens across Japan on January 17, 2025.
