‘The Monkey King: Heaven’s Great Mission’ (天降大任) is a 2024 Chinese animated fantasy action-adventure written and directed by Zhang Xiaoliang.

The film follows a young dragon disciple who goes in search of an heir to the Golden Hoop, but winds up encountering the mischievous Monkey and experiencing a wild adventure.

Synopsis: In a battle against an alien invasion, the Martial Sage Daewoo sacrificed his life. On his deathbed, he instructed his disciple, Pujuan, to find the next heir to the Golden Hoop. The ignorant Pujuan travelled all over the world without finding the “true son” of the Golden Hoop but was accidentally taken away by a wild monkey. The two of them wound up at the academy for training the Chosen One by mistake, and the monkey was named “Empty” by their ancestor. The monkey’s misbehaviour does not last long, but he soon gets into serious trouble and is expelled from the academy along with Pujuan. Back on Earth, they meet Nuwa, a young girl who is preparing to travel to the city of Ruipu alone to rescue her people, and she recognizes the monkey as a hero who will save the world. Although they have not yet mastered their skills, the pair are full of confidence and start an unplanned rescue mission with Nuwa in tow! [© Far East Films]
