‘Tide’ (戏是人生) is a 2022 Chinese period drama co-written and directed by Michael Chen.
The film revolves around a young boy who is reluctantly sold into the Teochew opera by his parents but slowly begins to appreciate the art. The cast includes Xu Bowen, Yi Denglin, Sun Yuhan, and Zhu Guangyao.
Synopsis: In the 1930s, Teochew opera was in gradual decline. Although there were still people who clung to its heritage and culture, it was like a reef ravaged by the tide, fading in and out under the impact of that turbulent period. When Lin Guan was young, his mother was forced to sell him to become a child actor in a Teochew opera class to make ends meet. This was undoubtedly the most tragic moment for Guan, with his parents’ abandonment and the hardships of practising, but his initial dislike grew into a gradual love for the art. As Guan’s skills matured, his talent became apparent. Within a few years, the pairing of Guan and Gou San gradually became popular but just as Guan’s life was beginning to blossom, life once again played a joke on him… [© Far East Films]
