Blu-ray release: 'Father Knows Best – A Trilogy'

Imprint Films are bringing Ang Lee‘s ‘Father Knows Best’ trilogy – comprising ‘Pushing Hands’, ‘The Wedding Banquet’, and ‘Eat Drink Man Woman’ – to Australian Blu-ray on September 24, 2025.

Academy Award-winning director Ang Lee has soared to the heights of Hollywood with big-budget genre entries, but these ’90s dramedies are where he made his start, then retroactively branded as the ‘Father Knows Best’ trilogy.

Connected in their exploration of class and culture conflict, the three films tackle tension through a comedic lens, each starring regular Ang Lee collaborator Lung Sihung as a key paternal figure, and found critical and commercial success not only in Taiwan but on an international scale, catapulting Ang Lee into the global spotlight.

Pushing Hands / 推手 (1991)
Cast: Lung Sihung, Wang Lai, Deb Snyder, Wang Bozhao, and Lee Haan.
A recently widowed tai-chi master moves from Beijing to New York to live with his son and his family, but his American daughter-in-law is not pleased with the arrangement – particularly when he finds fault with how she manages the home.
