Blu-ray release: ‘Painted Faces’

88 Films will release the 1988 Hong Kong biographical drama ‘Painted Faces’ (七小福) on UK Blu-ray on June 15, 2026.
Written and directed by Alex Law, the film traces the formative years of a group of opera students as they endure strict training under a demanding mentor, drawing on real-life experiences. The cast includes Sammo Hung, Cheng Pei-Pei, Lam Ching-Ying, Chung Gam-Yam, Cheung Man-Lung, and Wong Kim-Wai.
Synopsis: Set in mid-20th century Hong Kong, a strict Peking Opera master takes in a group of young boys—many from struggling families—and subjects them to rigorous training and harsh discipline. As they grow from childhood into adolescence, they form lasting bonds while grappling with the demands of a fading tradition and the uncertain futures that lie ahead.
