Blu-ray release: ‘Sakuran’

88 Films will release the 2007 Japanese historical drama ‘Sakuran’ (さくらん) on US and UK Blu-ray on March 23/24, 2026.
Based on the manga by Moyoco Anno and directed by Mika Ninagawa, the film traces the turbulent rise of a rebellious courtesan whose refusal to conform challenges the strict hierarchy and expectations of Yoshiwara’s pleasure district. The cast includes Anna Tsuchiya, Hiroki Narimiya, Yoshino Kimura, Kippei Shiina, and Miho Kanno.
Synopsis: In the vibrant pleasure quarters of Edo-period Yoshiwara, a fiercely independent girl sold into a brothel rises through the ranks to become a celebrated oiran. As rivalry, desire, and strict tradition close in around her, she struggles to preserve her identity and pursue love within a world where beauty and freedom are carefully controlled commodities.
