Hong Kong film and television actor “Benz” Hui Siu-Hung (許紹雄) has died at the age of 76. He had been battling kidney cancer, which ultimately led to multiple organ failure.

Hui was born on 4 November 1948 in Hong Kong. At some point in his early life, he moved with his family to Guangzhou as they hailed from the prominent Xu/許 clan, with roots in the historic land on Gaodi Street. In 1958, he returned to Hong Kong, which would remain his home for the rest of his life.

Hui entered the entertainment industry in 1971 when he joined the first cohort of the TVB Artiste Training Class. Before fully launching his acting career, he worked at Commercial Radio Hong Kong (CRHK), where a colleague nick‑named him “Benz” in reference to his Mercedes‑Benz, and the name stuck. After a few years, he moved to work at Rediffusion Television (formerly ATV), and later returned to TVB, where he remained under contract for much of his career.

His first film role came in 1972 when he appeared in ‘Young People’ directed by Chang Cheh. Over the years, he built a prolific career, typically in supporting roles, and amassed credits in more than 165 films. Among his many memorable roles, his credits include ‘Running Out of Time’ (1999), ‘Expect the Unexpected’ (1998), ‘Magnificent Team’ (1998) ‘Love Undercover’ (2002), and ‘Legendary Assassin’ (2008).

A major milestone came in 2013 when he won the Best Supporting Actor award at the TVB Anniversary Awards for his performance in the TV comedy series ‘Bounty Lady’. The following year, 2014, he played Chum Foon‑Hei in the TV drama ‘Line Walker’, which significantly boosted his profile. He also received the Most Popular Male Character award that year. Following this success, he expanded into commercial appearances, roles in mainland China dramas, and even made a guest appearance in a film adaptation of the series.

In his later years, Hui remained active in his career, saying: “If you don’t want to die, then don’t retire.” He maintained a steady presence on television and in films, continuing to take on supporting roles that drew on his long experience.

Hui Siu-Hung was undoubtedly one of the great talents of the Hong Kong entertainment industry, and it was always a joy to see him appear in any role. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends.
