OMURO Ltd are hosting an online streaming event in March to celebrate the works of Japanese producer and director Masato Hara (原正人).

Hara started his career in the film industry at the age of 18, working in production and promotion under the tutelage of Tadashi Imai and Satsuo Yamamoto. He joined Kadokawa Herald Pictures in 1958, and was involved in the production of films such as Osamu Tezuka’s ‘A Thousand and One Nights’ (1969) and Akira Kurosawa‘s ‘Dersu Uzala‘ (1975). Hara also worked as assistant director on Toshio Matsumoto’s drama ‘Funeral Parade of Roses’ (1969), and co-wrote the screenplay for Nagisa Oshima’s ‘The Man Who Left His Will’ (1970).

Taking place at the Lumen Gallery in Kyoto, the upcoming event will include various short films and talks as well as a screening of Hara’s 1973 documentary ‘The First Emperor’. The film is a travelogue by Hara himself that is essentially a film about film. It was considered to be an inspiration for an entire generation of young filmmakers, but sadly the master tape was destroyed in a fire at Hara’s home in 2018. Now his team have successfully re-printed and re-mastered ‘The First Emperor’, and OMURO are proudly showing it as part of the online “Resurrection Roadshow”.

Full details and tickets are available now from Zaiko – March 13March 14.
