Anime Limited will release the 1988 Japanese animated cyberpunk action film ‘Akira’ (アキラ) in UK IMAX and cinemas on April 17, 2026.

Co-written and directed by Katsuhiro Otomo, the film follows a secret military project that turns a teenage biker gang member into a dangerous psychic, leaving his best friend to stop him. The voice cast includes Mitsuo Iwata, Nozomu Sasaki, Mami Koyama, Taro Ishida, and Tessho Genda.

Synopsis: In July 1988, World War III breaks out, and decades later, Neo-Tokyo has risen from the ruins. Kaneda, the leader of a gang of young delinquents, spends his nights racing through the city, but when his friend Tetsuo encounters a mysterious boy—the result of secret government experimentation—and is injured in the crash that follows, he is taken away by the military. Determined to rescue him, Kaneda infiltrates a research facility, only to discover that experiments have awakened a dangerous power within Tetsuo, pushing him toward madness.

‘Akira’ will be screened in Japanese with English subtitles and in an English dubbed version. Please check local listings for details.
