‘Disease of Family’ (家族という病) is a 2026 Japanese drama directed by Chikako Oyama.

Based on the bestselling 2015 essay by Akiko Shimoju, the film explores the absurdities and pressures of modern family life through a series of interconnected stories. The cast includes Takahiro Fujimoto, Tomochika, Eri Watanabe, Keisuke Koide, Ken Teraizumi, and Ai Sakakibara.

Synopsis: Mystery novelist Junichiro Tahara has allowed his domineering wife to dictate the course of his life, leaving his true potential unrealised. Retired salaryman Yuji Matsubara struggles to maintain the appearance of success while living under the shadow of his mother’s expectations, while high-school student Maria Kuroki finds herself increasingly isolated after rumours spread that her mother is an adult film actress. As their families grapple with expectation, obligation, and social conformity, their lives become unexpectedly intertwined through an award-winning young author whose provocative work challenges conventional ideas about family and identity. [© Far East Films]

‘Disease of Family’ is scheduled for release in Japan on June 26, 2026.
