‘The Belief’ (澎湖海战) is a 2026 Chinese historical war film directed by Soi Cheang.
The film dramatises the events leading up to the Battle of Penghu in 1683, when Qing admiral Shi Lang launched a decisive campaign against the Kingdom of Tungning. The cast includes Wang Xueqi, Du Jiang, Jackson Yee, Hou Wenyuan, and Luo Yizhou.
Synopsis: In 1681, the powerful ministers Feng Xifan and Liu Guoxuan assassinate Zheng Kezang and install the 12-year-old Zheng Keshuang as the new ruler of the Kingdom of Tungning. As the regime intensifies its military expansion and continues its raids along China’s southeastern coast, repeated attempts by the Kangxi Emperor to secure a peaceful surrender prove unsuccessful. In 1683, Admiral Shi Lang is ordered to lead the Fujian fleet against Taiwan, culminating in the Battle of Penghu, where his decisive victory brings the conflict to an end and reunifies Taiwan under Qing rule.
