‘Unchained’ (四月の余白) is a 2026 Japanese drama directed by Keisuke Yoshida.
Based on Yoshida’s own experiences with troubled youths and the communities surrounding them, the film follows a former delinquent who runs a rehabilitation facility for at-risk children. The cast includes Wataru Ichinose, Kaho, Hayato Uesaka, Atsushi Shinohara, and Fusako Urabe.
Synopsis: Kengo Nishi, a former prisoner and one-time gang member, operates a residential rehabilitation centre for troubled children in a coastal town. When middle-school teacher Fuyuko Kusano seeks help for Kaito, a deeply troubled student struggling to understand the feelings of others and caught in a cycle of violence and delinquency, the boy is sent to Nishi’s facility in the hope that he can change. As Kaito clashes with staff and fellow residents, Nishi remains determined to reach him, but the challenges facing both the boy and the facility soon threaten to undermine everything he has worked to build.
