‘Why Do People Write Love Letters?’ (人はなぜラブレターを書くのか) is a 2026 Japanese drama written and directed by Yuya Ishii.

The film centres on a long-sent letter that connects two strangers shaped by the same loss, revealing forgotten truths as their exchange unfolds. The cast includes Haruka Ayase, Ami Toma, Kota Hosoda, Satoshi Tsumabuki, and Masaki Suda.

Synopsis: More than twenty years after a tragic day changed everything, Nazuna writes a letter to a boy she once loved in silence — a devoted young boxer she used to see on the same train as a teenager. When the letter reaches his father, Ryuji, it reveals memories and emotions he never knew his son carried, prompting a quiet exchange between two strangers united by loss. Through their correspondence, forgotten truths resurface, and the act of writing becomes a way to face the past, preserve love, and spark an unexpected miracle. [© Far East Films]

‘Why Do People Write Love Letters?’ opens in Japanese cinemas on April 17, 2026.
