‘Hachigatsu no Koe wo Hakobu Otoko’ (八月の声を運ぶ男) is a 2026 Japanese drama directed by Gaku Shibata.
Based on the true story of journalist Akihiko Ito, who travelled across Japan recording the testimonies of atomic bomb survivors, the film follows a journalist who dedicates himself to preserving their voices for future generations. The cast includes Masahiro Motoki, Shizuka Ishibashi, Aoi Ito, Machiko Ono, Tetsushi Tanaka, and Sadao Abe.
Synopsis: In 1972, former Nagasaki broadcaster Tamotsu Tsujihara travels across Japan recording the voices of atomic bomb survivors, despite finding little understanding or support for his work. During his journey, he meets survivor Kazuhei Kuno and is deeply moved by his testimony, but soon discovers that his story is filled with mysteries. [© Far East Films]
Originally broadcast on NHK in August 2025, ‘Hachigatsu no Koe wo Hakobu Otoko’ will be released in cinemas across Japan on August 21, 2026, with previously unseen scenes added for the theatrical version.
