‘You Are the Film’ (君は映画) is a 2026 Japanese sci-fi comedy written and directed by Makoto Ueda.
The film centres on a playwright and a musician whose lives become entangled in a surreal chain of events after their everyday experiences begin playing out on a cinema screen. The cast includes Marika Ito, Kai Inowaki, Riko Fujitani, Oshiro Maeda, and Hinako Kikuchi.
Synopsis: Inside a small Shimokitazawa cinema, an impossible chain of events begins when the lives of playwright Madoka and musician Kazuma start appearing on screen in real time. As trouble erupts in the neighbouring venues Good Heavens and Mikazuki Rock, the two try to use this bizarre phenomenon to set things right, only to find that their parallel “stories” begin affecting one another in unpredictable ways, sending events spiralling in directions neither can control. ‘You Are the Film’ is scheduled for release in Japan on June 19, 2026. It has also been picked up for international distribution by Third Window Films.
